US astronaut to speak at University

Astronaut Harrison Schmitt will be delivering two lectures, organised by the Department of Physics together with the International Year of Astronomy committee and the US Embassy, at the University on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first lecture is aimed at a general audience and the second is more suited for those familiar with space exploration, ideally academics and science students who are over 16 years old.

Both lectures will be held in Room 401 at the Mathematics and Physics Building at 6.30 p.m. and will last about an hour.

Those who wish to attend must register by sending an e-mail to physics.sci@um.edu.mt.

Senator Schmitt is a geologist and was involved in Nasa's Apollo space programme. He was the lunar module pilot of the Apollo 17 mission and is the only scientist ever to travel to the moon.

Following the mission, he was appointed professor of engineering physics, became a senator, chairman of the Nasa Advisory Council, founder and chairman of Interlune Intermars Initiative Inc. and an author.
